Early Life:
Amitav Ghosh was born in Calcutta on July 11, 1956 in the Bengali Hindu family, lt Col. Shledra Chandra Ghosh, a retired officer of the former Freedom Indian Army. All the boys he was educated at Don School, where he edited The Dawn School Weekly. His contemporaries in Dun included writers Vikram Seth and Ram Guha. After Dun, he got a degree from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University and Delhi School of Economics. Then he d. Phil won the Inlux Foundation scholarship to complete. In social anthropology at Oxford St Edmund Hall under the supervision of Peter Leinhardt. His first job was in the Indian Express newspaper in New Delhi.

Ghosh lives with his wife, Deborah Baker, laura riding biography in Execmis: The Life of Laura Riding (1993) and author of Little, a senior editor of Brown & Co. They have two children, Lila and Nayan. He has been a partner at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta and the Centre for Development Studies at Trivandrum. In 1999, Ghosh joined the faculty at Queens College, New York University, as a distinguished professor in comparative literature. He has also been a guest professor in the English Department of Harvard University since 2005. Ghosh later returned to India, starting working on the IBS trilogy, including The Sea of Poppies (2008), Smoke River (2011), and Flood Fire (2015).

Amitav Ghosh's novel ' Glass Palace ' won the grand prize at the Frankfurt International e-Book Award in the year 2001. Amitav Ghosh achieved another feat when he won a leading literary award 'Bookcart Prize' in the year 1999 for one of his essays published in the Kenyon Review. Amitav Ghosh's book ' In N Antique Land ' was honoured by the notable magazine The New York Times in the year 1993. 'Hangri Tide' is his recently published book.

He often travelled among his youth, living in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Sri Lanka, Iran and India. Ghosh attended the University of Delhi and received his B.A. Honored in history in 1976 and did Ma in sociology in 1978. In 1978, he began studying at Oxford University in Social Anthropology. While in Oxford, Ghosh studied the archives of documents from twelfth-century Egypt and was given a scholarship that allowed him to travel to a small Egyptian village in 1980 to pursue his research. The village was located in the Nile River Delta and lived in Ghosh Falheen, or Egyptian farmers. He earned a PhD from Oxford. In social anthropology in 1982. From 1983 to 1987, Ghosh worked in the Department of Sociology at The University of Delhi.

His book The Circle of Regen has won France's main literary award Prix Medicine Award. Thereafter, the shadow lines have also won the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Nanda Award.
